READING: Men and machines, by Ernst Gombrich (LANGUAGE SKILLS IN HISTORY #ESO4 )

LANGUAGE SKILLS IN HISTORY (ESO 4)

Throughout the first term, for units 2 and 3, we have read two chapters of  Ernst Gombrich's A Little History of the World (The French Revolution and Men and Machines). We have started off this second term rereading the latter in order to practise summaries, outlines and mind-maps. Here are some of the students' final products.

  1. BIEDERMEIER ERA: period of tranquility / leisure and music.

GALILEO: rational / mathematical approach to study of nature which led to a far greater revolution. (Use the forces of nature)

    INVENTIONS:
James Watt (1769) : Scottish engineer who invented the steam engine
Robert Fulton (1803) : steamboat on the Seine
George Stephenson (1814) : effective steam engine named Blücher
(1825) railway opened between Stockton and Darlington
Samuel Morse (1837) electric telegraph→rapid communication before telephone
Machines→ factories needed coal and iron→countries with more materials had a great advantage

CHANGE: Machines started to be faster, better and cheaper. WORKERS STARTED TO DON’T BE NEEDED. People began to despair because of the lack of work.

    KARL MARX: ownership altogether

DIFFERENT SITUATION: Power was in the hands of noblemen whose authority Metternich helped to restore.

REVOLUTION IN PARIS OF 1848: The citizens tried to obtain the power of the state through a Revolution.

END OF OLD REGIME: The Old Regime was definitely over after the Revolution being a success.
