One of the most seemingly challenging out of all in-class activities that we used to do before COVID-19 happens to be the small groups projects. We have missed them so much since this pandemic started to change our lives at school, that we have been trying to figure out how to use this active methodology when working from home (remote learning) and also when working at school.
During the remote learning sessions, we found a way using Google meet rooms, which turned out to be really interesting and useful, and now we have returned to the building with new ideas. Ana Trinidad, our Science teacher, had designed a project in which the students would work in class, during a lesson and maintaining physical distancing: using small WhatsApp groups for discussions in addition to the world wide Web and their Coursebook for research.
It was not an easy task to convince everyone that the students' mobile phone/tablet/device could be used as a potentially powerful pedagogical tool in class these days.
I was amazed yesterday when we started implementing Ana's project: Students were actually focused, working together to investigate a question about the hydrosphere and the environment and they were reporting their findings back to their group using WhatsApp.
