All these years while working in Language Skills in Science and Geography and History and as a teacher of English as a Second Language in Literacy, as well as in my previous teaching experiences as a teacher of English as a foreign language, I have noticed that when my students listen to each other tell their stories, they become more and more self-confident and they build stronger relationships, a key part of social and emotional learning. That's a great value of presentations for me, as a teacher. Peer-to-peer assessment, self-assessment and teacher-to-student assessment are present all the way through.
Within the framework of the last observance of the European Day of Languages, our students had to become software designers who had to convince an audience that their app was the best one ever to learn languages. For me, as a teacher all of these are fundamental tools to get my students become more fluent, communicative and self-assured.
Following THE GUIDELINES GIVEN in class, the students were organized in small groups to DESIGN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE LEARNING APPs.Then, they had to design a poster/flyer in order to sell it to the audience.
In their presentations they explained to their classmates EVERY DETAIL, every functionality of their app.
In the end we voted for the most useful one: our dream app to learn languages. Who knows? Maybe it will be developed at some point in the future!
