The Industrial Revolution: From the Workshop to the Factory

Implemented by Dr. Mónica Lanero and Ms. Marina Hurtado

Learning process from LOTS to HOTS

In order to make students aware of the dramatic changes caused by the introduction of machinery in 18th century economies, our activity  involved  several stages  of increasing level of difficulty.

Brainstorming and Knowledge organisers

A brainstorming showed that students had a variety of accurate ideas on what industry means today.

Reading and comprehension of texts provided them with the basic vocabulary and features on the manufacturing process both before and after the industrial revolution. Working  in pairs they filled  in a table on  craftsmanship and factory production,  a task involving deconstructing information by categorising, structuring, connecting and comparing, so from comprehension and  knowledge we moved to  analysis, a higher –order  thinking skill.

After checking the results in the following period, an individual task of synthesis was set to complete the activity: a composition to compare in many aspects as possible workshop and factory production.  Now we are able to proceed in further lessons to the highest order skill, evaluation, by considering the advantages and drawbacks of preindustrial and industrial economies and societies.
