It is said that fashion mirrors society, this being particularly true in the 19th century, when the roles of men and women in society were so sharply defined: women relegated to the domestic sphere, while men enjoyed the public one. The garments worn by upper and middle class women were so uncomfortable that would have made impossible for them to undertake any professional activity. Corsets, crinolines, bustles, or huge hats only disappeared after World War I, when women were granted the vote in many countries and middle class women joined the labour market.
By reading texts, using a lot of pictures ,making paper dolls and watching period film scenes, 4th grade students got an insight into the life of the wealthy in the 19th century.
