This past Wednesday, Susana, Marina, and Jalen led an activity with the ESO2 in Social Sciences where they presented posters on medieval Spanish history. Over the past few weeks in small groups, the students had worked to create posters highlighting different areas, groups, and systems in medieval Spain. The students had the choice to create their posters however they wanted and they presented their information in different but imaginative ways. For example, some chose to use coffee grounds to die their paper to resemble old parchment.
To share their posters and practice their presentation skills, the students participated in a gallery walk, which is an activity method that attempts to get students to engage each other in small group discussions using more than just textual presentations. This method forced the kids to synthesize what they had learned and can see on the posters and engage with the material with their peers. Additionally, if there was a question or doubt, the gallery walk allowed the presenting student to easily highlight a graphic or selected text included on the poster. Moreover, the student groups each worked on different topics, so the gallery walk was a good method to reinforce the other topics that the class had previously covered.
