"Europe in Your Daily Life" Project, by Dr. Mónica Lanero Taboas #EuropeDay2022

Have you ever noticed the symbols of the European Union around you? This was the question set to the 3C Geography students.

The European Union has invested a lot of money in Spain since 1986, including in transport, education, health projects, to increase farmers’ standard of living, to help entrepreneurs set up or modernize their businesses, to develop rural areas, and to protect the environment. As Extremadura is one of the European regions that has received a great deal from the European funds, the students had to figure out why.

Since every activity financed with the help of European funds has to show that information on a poster, each student was instructed to find a poster to learn about how the EU budget has been spent in their region, town, or even in their high school. Their next task was to explain to their classmates what EU funds and the Spanish institutions were involved in co-financing the project and why.

This was not an easy task: they had to research through a lot of sources and learn about the EU budget, the objectives of the EU cohesion policy, the EU funds and their aims, and disentangle the competences of the Spanish institutions: the national Government, the regional authorities, and the Town Council.

They performed a very good job, as you can see in the exhibition at the entrance of the IES Al-Qázeres main building to commemorate May 9th, Europe Day. Below are a few examples of the students' work.
