BOOK CLUB: Elements of Plot Structure

In reading narrative, knowing the elements of the plot structure and being able to identify and transform them into a “Plot Diagram” are essential tools for building literacy comprehension and literary appreciation. According to storyboardthat, plot diagrams allow students to pick out major themes in the text, trace changes to major characters over the course of the narrative, and hone their analytic skills. (...) The concepts not only give students a fuller understanding of classroom texts, but also their favourite books and movies.

Having seen the elements of the Plot Structure, the students had to identify them in their Book Club Book: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Elements of the Plot Structure: Story Map, by Paula Bote Andrada

Setting

  • Kansas
  • Land of Oz:
Yellow Brick Road
Forest
Poppy Fields
Emerald City

Characters

  • Main Characters: Dorothy, Toto, Tin Woodman, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.
  • Supporting Characters: The Wizard of OZ, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Good Witch of the North, the Good Witch of the South and the Wicked Witch of the East.

Problem- What is the problem of the story?

Dorothy and her dog Toto end up in the land of Oz after a tornado blows away their home. There, along with the creatures she encounters on her way, Dorothy will look for the Wizard of Oz to see if he can help them return home.

Solution- How is the problem solved?

The Wizard ended up being a regular person who didn’t know magic, so they returned home using the silver shoes Dorothy was given at the beginning of the book.

Moral/Lesson of the story- What did you learn about the story?

I've learnt that sometimes the solution to a problem is right before your eyes the whole time and that the simplest one sometimes is the right option, but that's just one of the many things I have absorbed from the book.
