Procedural Texts and Infographics in our #alqareading Book club: The case of the Tin Man (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) #ALQAREADING

By reading we also find opportunities to learn about language use. With this hands on activity the students build a tin man at the same time as they explain the "how-to".

LEIRE

Hello, my name is Leire García and I am a third year student in Al-Qázeres high school. And I am going to explain how we can make one Tin Man, from the Wizard of Oz, at home.
Let's start by knowing what materials we will have to use. We need one awl, heavy wire, one wire cutter, one to two wood screws, one to middle metal screw with nut, two moveable eyes, one 946 ml can, one 384 ml can, one 591 ml can, four 22 ml vegetable cans, two sardine cans, four soft drink cans, a silver spray paint, acrylic paint: black and red and one funnel.
We are going to start opening the tops of each can and remove the contents, and drain drink cans. Spray all cans and funnel, with silver paint. Spray funnel inside and out. Let dry completely. Then, with an awl, punch holes in vegetable cans, each side, middle from top and bottom. Punch holes in the drink cans, each side, three middles, from the bottom. Turn vegetable cans upside down over the drink cans until the first set of holes on the vegetable can meet the holes on the drink can. Run a three, three fourths piece of wire through both cans; bend ends of wire. You have just made the arms and legs.
In the next step, we will turn sardine cans with the open side down: this will be the feet. Place each leg combo on the backside of a sardine can. Run wood screw from open side of sardine can through bottom of drinking can to attach feet to leg. Then, turn the 946 ml can upside down and punch a hole in the centre bottom. This will be the body.
Punch holes on each side, top and bottom, ½ from edge. Punch holes in the 591 ml can, for the neck two middle from the bottom on each side, and one hole in the centre of the bottom. Set the neck right side up on the body. Bolt together using a screw and nut.
And, finally, stick the two movable eyes, and make his nose and ‘bottoms’ with the black acrylic paint and with the red the mouth and some decorations, as a heart.
I hope that when someone asks you how you have made your tin man, you could explain how.
Goodbye.

HOW TO MAKE A TIN MAN, by Elena Martín Cava (PODCAST and text)

Materials needed:

  • 5 cans (beans, dog’s food…) 1 head, 2 arms, 2 legs
  • A hammer
  • A nail
  • Rectangular box or a big can (for the body)
  • Wires
  • Silver paint
  • A Black marker
  • A Red cupboard
  • A Pencil, rubber
  • Scissors

Steps:

1º The first step would be to paint the cans and the box or the big can with the silver paint.

2º The second step would be to make deep holes in the cans with a hammer and a nai. For the box or the big can, you would make a hole in the top (for the head), one on each side (for the arms) and two more on the bottom (for the legs). And for the other cans, you need to make one whole in the top and another in the bottom.

3º The next step would be to tie all the cans together with the wire. The cans of the arms on each side of the box or the largest can. The leg cans on the bottom and the head cans on the top.

4º Now that you have the shape of the tin man, it's time for the fun part, decorating it! You can put fake eyes and draw a nose and a mouth with the black marker. You can also make him a red heart to put on his chest... Whatever you want, that's your choice!

And this is HOW TO MAKE A TIN MAN. I hope you like it and that you had a good time doing it.

Bye!

How did I make my Tin Man? by CARLOS VÁZQUEZ

  • Firstly, I sticked four metal washers and a buckle over a can of squid (acting like the eyes and nose of the Tin Man).
  • Then, I sticked a paper clip and two old buttons over a can of sardines(as if they were the tie, and the buttons of the shirt of the Tin Man).
  • Later, I cut the arms and the legs of the Tin Man from cans of fizzy drinks, and I glued them over the can of sardines.
  • Finally, I joined the head and the body of the Tin Man.
