Today in a co-teaching lesson in Language Skills in Social Science, our teacher Justo has explained that circular economy is an economic model that aims to minimise waste, maximise resource efficiency, and promote sustainability.
This was a hot topic to discuss within the framework of the topical talk festival since while there were multiple arguments in favour of the circular economy, there were also some counterarguments against it so we aimed at exploring both sides.
Some arguments the students emphasised in favour of circular economy:
1. Resource efficiency since it promotes the efficient use of resources (recycling, reuse, and repair).
2. Waste reduction, aiming at minimising waste generation and landfill disposal. The students saw how this reduction encourages the design of products and processes that enable the recovery, re-manufacturing, and recycling of materials, which in turn reduces environmental pollution.
3. Economic benefits, aiming at innovation in product design, recycling technologies, and resource management systems, leading to the development of new industries and job creation.
4. Environmental benefits.
However, in another perspective some arguments against the circular economy the students mentioned were the technological challenges it poses and that the circular economy may not be applicable to all sectors because some products and materials may not be easily recyclable or have limited potential for reuse. Our student Irene remarked that the success of a circular economy relies on changing consumer behaviour and preferences and that can be difficult to achieve.
