Dear all,
As a class, we will be reading Wonder within the framework of our #alqareading book club. This novel, which focuses on how to be kind and accepting of others, is set in our contemporary culture. Before setting off, we will research some relevant aspects about the setting, social relationships and society beauty standards (which we will question and smash!). This book club will also help us fix and practice the contents you learn in Maria José's literacy lessons! I'm so excited to embark on this adventure with you all!
The story is about August Pullman, called Auggie, who has a craniofacial deformity (mandibulofacial dysostosis, also called Treacher Collins, which we will research in the Science Lesson in a cross-curricular way with Ms Victoria Merino). The protagonist is starting the fifth grade at a school with other children, after being home schooled for the last five years.
The idea for this book came to R.J. Palacio after she saw a child with a craniofacial deformity. We will start reading this book in October. If you have any questions before starting off, do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Marina
ICE-BREAKER: Wonder, by R.J. Palacio
"Doctors have come from distant cities just to see me
Stand over my bed, disbelieving what they're seeing
They say I must be one of the wonders, God's own creation
And as far as they see, they can offer no explanation"
WHAT DOES "WONDER" MEAN?
Now you know we are going to be dealing with Wonder this year. We will start by researching the author. Who is R. J. Palacios? You will write a short biography using a graphic organiser like the one below. Do not forget to mention your sources. Remember Wikipedia does not know everything!
