CREATIVITY: Packing James’s Suitcase
Book engagement
Objective: Our first graders will engage with the text of chapter 1 of “James and the Giant Peach” by imagining themselves in James’s shoes, reflecting on the significance of belongings and the emotions tied to leaving home.
WARMING UP
After having read chapters 1 and 2 we know James a lot better now. In your opinion, how does James feel about his life with Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge?
How difficult do you think change and a new beginning are for James taking into account the tragic loss of his parents?
How difficult do you think change and new beginnings are in general? (themes)
INSTRUCTIONS: Imagine we had the chance to help James. Bring an object to school to put inside "James's suitcase'. Think about the object considering also the following:
- Personal memories
- Comfort items
- Things that represent who you are.
Then explain why you believe James should pack it in his suitcase by explaining its significance: why you would pack this item to move to a new home?
