Literacy Skills in Science: Mindmapping the information given in an oral/written text #co-teaching

Mind mapping is a technique that is used to connect ideas using main words that give directions to the human mind. Mind mapping facilitates the teaching-learning process for knowledge construction.

This activity was carried out in order to examine the effect of mind-mapping activities on students’ learning, academic achievement, and retention of knowledge in the subject of Science. Hence, the activity was developed during the co-teaching lesson.

It has been proven that Bloom's taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, among others) can work really well with our second graders. Our Literacy Adviser provided the students with a mind map template and they worked in pairs with other content which was related to the subject matter. Once they had had enough practice, they were ready to create, individually, and following the guidelines their very own mind maps.

The mind mapping method was used to teach students about the topic of "Matter and its Properties". The results from this mind-mapping activity have clearly revealed that the mind-mapping technique has had a positive impact on our students' learning of the subject matter: "The Properties of Matter".

Here are some samples of the students outcome:

  1. May I know what app do you use in creating that mindmap? Love it, anyway.
