Topic: ROBOts and “James and the Giant Peach”

Activating Prior Knowledge

SPEAKING. Discussion: What do you know about robots? How do you think a robot would behave in a magical story like “James and the Giant Peach”?

LISTENING. Watch ONE of the following videos (or TWO, or the THREE OF THEM, if you are super enthusiastic about the topic of robots!) and find out if you were right or wrong in your answers to the first question:

VIDEO 3: STEM (How do robots work?)

Brainstorming robot characteristics and personalities. 

Examples:

A robot gardener CAN maintain the peach.

A robot navigator CAN help guide the journey.

Literary Analysis

Revisit key moments in “James and the Giant Peach” where the themes of friendship, courage, adventure are highlighted.

Discuss how a RoboPeach might impact the storyline or help/hinder the characters.

Planning for your Final Product

Choose only ONE format:

OPTION 1. Creative Writing:

1) Short Story: Write a short story titled James and the Robot Peachmate. Write a 100-word creative story featuring the robot. Include dialogue, sensory details, and illustrations (optional).

2) Comic Strip: Include illustrations or comic strips if desired. Comic Strip: Illustrate key scenes where the robot interacts with the characters.

OPTION 2. Model Building:

Build a model of their imagined robot using recyclable materials, LEGOs, or craft supplies. Write a short description of the robot’s role in James’ adventure.

OPTION 3: Drama and Roleplay:

1) Act out a scene where James and the peach characters meet the robot. Record or present live with costumes.

2) Video/Animation: Act out or animate a scene involving the robot (using apps like Stop Motion Studio or Flipgrid).

OPTION 4. Digital Design of a robot:

Use a simple design app to create a digital prototype of the robot. Add labels describing its features and functions. You can use using apps like Stop Motion Studio or Flipgrid.
