With this project you will get more familiar with the different elements in the periodic table; you will strengthen your own understanding of the periodic table by identifying and using element symbols creatively as well as explore themes, characters, and settings from our #AlQaReading book club "Wonder", by R.J. Palacio.
YOUR TASK
You will use symbols from the periodic table to "spell out" names of characters, places, or key words/phrases from "Wonder".
For example: Auggie = Au (Gold) + G (not in table, skipped) + Ge (Germanium).
NOTE: If a word cannot be fully formed, get as close as possible!
Follow the instructions given in the following presentation.
Names of Characters: Use the periodic table to form: Auggie, Via, Jack, Summer, Julian. You must write down the element symbols and their full names, for example:
Jack = J (not in table, skipped) + Ac (Actinium) + K (Potassium).
Write: "Actinium (Ac) + Potassium (K)."
The SETTING: Places in Wonder: Create words for key locations: School, Beecher Prep, New York
Themes and/or Quotes: create key words/phrases using the periodic table, e.g., "Kindness," "Courage," or "Empathy." Alternatively, pick a memorable quote from the book and create part of it using element symbols, for example: "When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind", where you must spell "Kind" = K (Potassium) + I (Iodine) + Nd (Neodymium).
Metacognition and Sharing :
Share your WonderFULperiodic table with the class and explain/ reflect on how the themes of "Wonder" can connect to science (for example, Auggie's surgeries and medical advancements).
Assessment Rubric: Your literacy adviser will assess your:
- Creativity in combining the periodic table with "Wonder".
- Understanding of element symbols and periodic table structure.
- Engagement with "Wonder"’s characters, places, and themes.
