The Students as #AlQaReading Zinesters: Voices of Change
Hey, class! Let's first quickly recap Chapters 5 and 6, highlighting Vivian’s discovery of her mother’s feminist past and her decision to create the Moxie Zine. But what is a Zine, to begin with?
Zines are a powerful way to share thoughts and ideas (just like the characters in "Moxie"). With this mini-project you will learn to synthesise and creatively express key themes, events, and character developments from chapters 5 to 6 in Moxie, by Jennifer Mathieu.
But you might be wondering... How can we make a Zine?
GROUPING: You will be working in pairs. Each pair must create a one-page zine inspired by Moxie using A3 paper or cardboard.
YOUR TASK:
In order to do so, you MUST follow the steps below:
1. PLANNING PHASE: BRAINSTORMING (Thinking about your contents)
- What stood out to you in these chapters?
- What themes or messages do you think were most important?
- How did the characters evolve or take action?
- Discuss the significance of the (maga)zine as a tool for social change.
2. ZINE CREATION: Your zine MUST necessarily include ALL of the following CONTENTS:
- MESSAGE: pick one message or two you feel is important (examples: “Speak up for what’s right,” “Challenge unfair systems,” “Find your voice”, etc.).
- THEME: Pick a couple of themes. Here you have a list of them: Feminism, courage, resistance, solidarity, Vivian's Realisation, Dress Code Critique, Vivian's Determination, Lucy's Introduction of GRIT, Vivian's Frustration.
- A QUOTE: You must include quotes from the book or short statements about standing up for what you believe in.
- ADDITIONALLY, CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING IDEAS for content:
- A comic strip about a significant scene
- A poem inspired by a character's emotions
- A letter from one character to another
- Illustrations or a collage that capture key moments
Be as creative as you like, combining text, visuals, collage, etc.
3. GALLERY WALK PRESENTATION
We will display the zines around the classroom. You will present your zines to the rest of the class, sharing with them what inspired your zine and how it connects to chapters 5 and 6.
All of you will walk around, reading each other’s zines, and then leaving (positive) feedback on sticky notes that our Literacy Adviser will provide you with.
In the oral presentation you must INCLUDE about a couple of REFLECTION POINTS (METACOGNITION, below).
4. Reflection: Metacognition
- How did creating the zines helped you connect with Vivian’s journey and the themes of the book?
- What messages do you think Vivian wanted her classmates to hear? How can we apply those lessons in our own lives?
4. FOLLOW-UP: Discuss the significance of the zine as a tool for social change.
