Social Media and the News: Leadership for Change Project #literacy

Yesterday’s Literacy class was a wonderful example of co-teaching between our Literacy advisor Marina Hurtado and English teacher Mercedes Mateos, with the support of our American language assistant Laura Pino. Together, they co-taught Lesson 2 of our Leadership for Change project with our 4th ESO students.

The focus of the session was on how social media shapes our perception of news. Our students learnt about the concept of the algorithm: how it filters and shows us only the content we are predisposed to engage with. Through discussion, they reflected on how this affects the way we form opinions and consume information.

As part of the lesson, students debated which editor they would hire for their own imagined news company and explored the importance of using reliable sources, especially in a digital world filled with misinformation.

To close the activity, each student wrote on a post-it note a short reflection summarising what they had learnt: something to take home not only for class but also for life.

We are looking forward to Lesson 3, where we’ll begin planning our own leadership projects!
