International aid: what's the best way forward? Topical Talk Festival Week 3

This week, we’ve stepped into the complex (and often controversial) world of international aid: from the consequences of budget cuts to the uncertain future of global support. It’s been a powerful chance for our students to look beyond the classroom and hear directly from people working at the centre of these debates. Our students learnt how international aid plays out in the real world.

In 2026, the UK government reduced aid spending from 0.5% to 0.3% of national income, while defence spending increased. In July 2025, USAID, the United States’ main agency for delivering international aid, officially closed. As a result, many low-income countries that rely on aid are now being forced to do more with far less. So the big question remains: is international aid working in the way it should?

YEAR 3 LESSON IN ACTION

YEAR 4 LESSON IN ACTION

In this lesson, our students:

  1. Explored what international aid is, why it exists, and how it has been used
  2. Examined how aid is distributed and its real-world impact
  3. Evaluated different perspectives on the future of international aid

Thoughtful, challenging, and deeply relevant, this debate invited our students to grapple with some of the most pressing global issues of our time.
