Let's go help James Henry Trotter pack his suitcase #creativity #engagement #empathy #co-teaching

Working on CREATIVITY and Language: Packing James’s Suitcase.

Objective: Our first graders will engage with the text of chapter 1 of “James and the Giant Peach” by imagining themselves in James’s shoes, reflecting on the significance of belongings and the emotions tied to leaving home.

In this lesson, following the plan already described in detail in our blog entry "Helping James pack his suitcase", the students brought an object of their choice to school in order to put it inside "James's suitcase' to help him "survive" the move to his evil aunts' house. When making their choice, they had to consider personal memories, comfort items, useful items for his stay, etc.

Then, during the lesson, the students showed the class their item and explained why they believed James should pack it in his suitcase by explaining its significance. Finally, they put the item inside the suitcase which was filled with loads of toothpaste tubes, among others!

Here's what happened during the development of this learning situation and it was proven that with some creative and engaging activities, we teachers can make co-teaching fun and memorable!

Whenever a new word was needed or just showed up, the students recorded it in the out of the blue vocabulary worksheet.

Here are the presentations: James will definitely have the cleanest teeth ever!
