Stonehenge: a fascinating road to learn about it in our Year 1 History Lessons

In our Year 1 History class, curiosity and concentration came together in a lively session focused on developing listening and note-taking skills. The students were introduced to an engaging video about the fascinating Stonehenge monument, which served as the core of our activity. As they watched, they were encouraged to listen carefully and identify the main pieces of information, an important first step in learning how to process oral sources effectively.

In their notebooks, the students practised extracting key ideas rather than trying to capture every single word. This helped them understand that listening is not just about hearing, but about selecting, thinking, and making sense of information.

To complement this, the lesson also included an opportunity to follow instructions from a procedural oral text. The students watched a tutorial video that guided them step by step in drawing Stonehenge. This activity allowed them to practice careful listening in a different way, this time focusing on sequence, detail, and accuracy. It also strengthened their ability to translate spoken instructions into visual outcomes, bridging comprehension and creativity.

The classroom atmosphere was focused, with moments of quiet concentration mixed with bursts of excitement as their drawings began to take shape.

Through these activities, the students not only learnt about a historical monument but also developed essential literacy skills that will support their learning across all subjects.

Here are the results.
