From brain signals to life choices, from organs to society: Drugs + Your Body = It Isn’t Pretty (PROJECT-BASED SEM Model WORK)
This is a paper-based cross-curricular group project in which our students will explore how drugs affect the human body, the decisions we make, and society using ONLY the provided material: Drugs + Your Body: It Isn’t Pretty (poster + activities). It has been designed as a SEM Model (Schoolwide Enrichment Model).
1. Shared entry point: sparking interest
Type I Enrichment: Exploration
3. Skill development
Type II Enrichment: Learning how to investigate, think and communicate
In this stage, students learn or practise the skills they need in order to respond to the challenge.
This may include:
selecting reliable information, analysing sources, organising ideas, using subject-specific vocabulary, taking notes, comparing viewpoints, planning a product, developing critical thinking, preparing oral communication, or reflecting on their own learning process.
The teacher’s role is essential here. SEM does not mean “total freedom”. It means structured autonomy. Students need room to make decisions, but they also need clear guidance, scaffolding and feedback.
Once the whole class has worked through the common starting point, students can choose a route for further exploration.
In sum, a SEM-based lesson is a lesson in which all students begin from a shared experience, learn tools to think and investigate more effectively, choose a route for deeper learning, and create a meaningful product that they can share, explain and improve. It is not about doing more: It is about thinking better, making better decisions and communicating better.
