The International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually on September 23, and the European Day of Languages follows very closely on September 26. Sign Languages are part of European languages so we are going to take a closer look at them so that we can use this topic in the classroom to celebrate the European Day of Languages.
Sign language can be an invaluable classroom tool for teachers. You as a teacher might use signs for nonverbal signaling, or to add a multi-sensory component to songs, poems, or vocabulary learning. Watching an fluent signer is also such a clear example for students of how facial expression and body language can help convey meaning.
This week is the International Week of Deaf People and today is the International Day of Sign Languages, close enough to European Day of Languages which are great nudges to build our students' knowledge about Deaf culture—and maybe even learn some new signs together.
