The Use of Graphic Organisers as Tools for Managing Information and Improving Comprehension: Feudalism

Graphic organisers (such as mind maps, concept maps, charts, timelines and Venn diagrams) provide visual structures that help students organise ideas, recognise relationships, and see patterns within content. These tools are particularly valuable in subjects that involve abstract concepts or large amounts of interconnected information, as they reduce cognitive load and make learning more accessible. By translating written text into visual representations, students can more easily compare concepts, sequence events, and understand cause-and-effect relationships.

An example of this approach can be illustrated through a history activity on feudalism. In this activity, students were given a worksheet containing written information about the feudal system, including its social hierarchy, roles and responsibilities, economic structure, and key characteristics. Rather than answering traditional comprehension questions, students were asked to organise the information using one graphic organiser of their choice. Some students selected a pyramid diagram to represent the feudal hierarchy, while others chose a concept map or a table to compare the roles of kings, nobles, knights, and peasants.











This activity required students to actively engage with the text, identify essential information, and make decisions about how to structure it visually. By choosing their own graphic organiser, students exercised autonomy and applied note-taking strategies that suited their individual learning preferences. The resulting organisers not only demonstrated their understanding of feudalism but also served as effective study resources for later review.








The use of graphic organisers in secondary education is essential for developing independent, strategic learners. These skills support comprehension, organisation, and retention of information, while also preparing students for more advanced academic challenges. Integrating activities that combine reading, note-taking, and visual organisation, such as the feudalism worksheet task: enhances understanding and promotes deeper, more meaningful learning.
