International School Library Day at IES Al-Qázeres

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”

Jorge Luis Borges

On October 24th, we will open the doors of imagination and knowledge to celebrate the International School Library Day, a day born from both remembrance and hope. This initiative, launched in 1997 by the Spanish Association of Friends of Books for Children and Young People, honours the spirit of libraries while commemorating the tragic destruction of the Sarajevo National Library, burned down in 1992 during the Balkans War. From ashes, this celebration invites us to rebuild, with words, learning, and light.

At IES Al-Qázeres, we believe that the library is the vibrant heart of the school. It beats with curiosity, creativity, and connection, guided by our dedicated team of librarians who not only care for books but also inspire inquiry, collaboration, and discovery among other teachers and students alike. Thank you to our previous coordinator, María Luz Domínguez for everything she did and thank you as well to the new coordinator, Mar Garrido, for accepting this challenge and for the exciting journey that is to come.

As in previous years, our school joined this meaningful celebration through a series of engaging activities. Students this year will design their own bookmarks adorned with literary quotes, peace messages, or simply heartfelt declarations like “I love my library!”. Each small creation serves as a reminder that libraries are not just spaces filled with books but they are sanctuaries of thought, dialogue, and peace.

Because in every library, paradise is not just imagined: it is quietly built, page by page.
