Learning Summarising Skills in our #AlQaReading Book Club "Moxie" #literacyapproach

There are four common elements to include when creating a summary, which includes the following:

1. Introductory sentence: An introductory sentence for a summary often states the author and the text's title. NAME IT!
2. Main points of the original text: This restates the main points the author conveyed. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
3. Supporting arguments: Here, you list the arguments that support the author's thesis or main idea. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? WHERE/WHEN IS THIS HAPPENING?
4. Final point: Conclude your summary with the final point from the author. YOU MAY WANT TO ADD SOME PERSONAL REMARKS/OPINION. CONCLUSION.

 

MODEL TEXT

INTRODUCTION. 

This essay summarises the first chapter of the successful novel "Moxie", by Jennifer Mathieu which has recently been adapted for the big screen by Netflix. 

MAIN POINTS AND SUPPORTING ARGUMENTS 

The Book opens with a science in which Vivian, the protagonist of the book feels embarrassed during the English class when the teacher, Mr. Davies, calls on her; Viv never speaks up in class. When a new student to the school, Lucy Hernandez, raises her hand and answers the question, football player Mitchell Wilson interrupts her to say, “Make me a sandwich”. Instead of reprimanding Mitchell, the teacher gives the whole class MORE homework.

Mitchell Wilson is the star of the football team, which is the only thing their high school in the small town of East Rockport, population 6,000, has going for it, so no one ever disciplines Mitchell about his behavior. Vivian sits with her best friend, Claudia, and their other friends for lunch. They are the “sweet, mostly normal girls […] nice girls”. Vivian sees Lucy sitting alone, but she doesn’t want to become a target for Mitchell and his loud friends, so Vivian doesn’t ask Lucy to sit with her.

FINAL POINT

Later on in the book, in Chapter number 2 we know about Vivian’s mom, who is now a nurse at the urgent care center, but in her youth, she listened to punk rock and was known for being rebellious. We meet their cat in this second chapter too. It's named Joan Jett, after a singer in a 1970s all-girl band called the Runaways.

CONCLUSION

To conclude, chapter one has been a real page-turner and I had never expected the novel would be so entertaining and engaging. I think the topic of chauvinism itself is very promising but I need to read more to make my opinion. In the meantime, I'll finish reading chapter two. Can you guess what happens next? I can't. That's why this novel is so addictive.
