THE REFORMATION IN ENGLAND: Today's lesson

Here's a sketch of what's to come:

In this lesson, we are going to  learn about the transformative era of the Protestant Reformation and the subsequent rise of the Tudor dynasty in England

We shall begin with Martin Luther, whose theological challenges against the Catholic Church's sale of indulgences fractured religious unity across Europe. This spirit of rebellion was mirrored in England by Henry VIII, who severed ties with the Pope to establish himself as the Supreme Head of the Church of England primarily to secure an annulment of his marriage to the Spanish Queen Catherine of Aragon

We will focus on Henry's tumultuous search for a male heir through six marriages and his descent into a tyrannical rule marked by numerous executions. Following his death, his daughter Elizabeth I navigated a fractured kingdom, eventually solidifying England as a sovereign Protestant power while defending the realm against the Spanish Armada.

Ultimately, these accounts illustrate how personal conscience and political ambition permanently reshaped European religion and the English state.
