Through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, the UN General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Our 2nd Year students observed that day by working on the topic of poverty. We want our students to be conscious not only of the situation in which many people live but also of how lucky they are because they can enjoy a comfortable life.
Throughout a presentation, the students revised basic concepts such as what poverty is, what human beings' basic needs are and the factors that may contribute to poverty. They also looked at a real-time map of poverty in the world, analysing the inequalities that exist between different areas of the world. The presentation was followed up by some pair-work activities. Finally, the students designed posters to raise awareness on the topic of poverty.
